Websites are great, aren’t they? Well, some are. Some are uglier than St Mary Street on a Friday night, and some hide from Google like car keys in the morning or some such.
“Just to say how much I have appreciated your design work on my website. It was brilliant throughout. I especially want to honour your creativity, your commitment, your willingness to keep working and absolutely go the distance no matter what.” Dr Kerstin Schmidt
You may well have heard of WordPress. It’s brilliant. You can put your own blog or site up on their site for free (it’ll still have WordPress in the website name though), or you can install the package on your own site and host it yourself (just like what I’m doing right now!). It doesn’t have to be a blog, or even have a blog (see Kerstin’s site), but what it does do is provide a strong, flexible structure for a website that is so transparent and easily update-able that Google positively lovesit. And that means higher rankings, more hits and more customers to your site.
WordPress works with “themes”. There are thousands out there. The themes are designed with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and affect the way the bare bones of the WordPress workings appear to the viewer. For a dramatic look at how CSS can change the look of a whole site immediately, have a play around with this site- click on the designs options on the right hand side and be amazed.
What I do is work out what kind of a theme works best for the site. (My site uses a theme called “Elements of SEO” which originally looked like this; I chose it because I liked the layout). I then dig around in the guts of the CSS and make it look how I want it to. This saves time and effort, as compared with constructing all the code from scratch. I can do the same for you, too.
And do you want to know the best thing about WordPress? Once the design is signed off, *anyone* with admin status can make changes to text, upload pics, write blog posts. Yep, even you.
Website design starts from £400 + VAT.
